Agenda:
Deliberation on the reforms for comprehensive legislation for Gun Control

Texas, Tennessee, California. States of the United States of America that seem not as united on an issue that is of utmost importance today, gun control. For decades now, people of the United States have had split opinions on the use and ownership of guns. With an increase in gun violence throughout the country, and people of all kind regrettably dying rapidly, it is integral for the United States Senate to come to an extensive and stable solution, keeping in mind the people’s interests. Balance needs to be upheld in this period of crisis, delicate balance that lies on the scales of freedom and security. Senators must come together to represent their states and their people to their fullest capacity, and decipher this complex agenda, coming to meaningful conclusions that can impact people tangibly.

President, The United States Senate

My name is Reet Rijhwani, and I'm honoured to serve as the President of the United States Senate for this Intraschool EHMUN. I thrive in MUNs and debates, sharpening my strategic thinking not just on stage but also through chess. When I’m not buzzing around in academics, you’ll find me lost in a novel, and yes, I’d absolutely swoon if Shawn Mendes walked by—no shame in that!

The U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives comprise the two chambers of Congress. The United States Senate was established in 1789 under the Constitution.  The Senate has 100 members, two from each state, who are elected to serve for six years, with the terms of about one-third of the Senate membership expiring every two years. Their constitutional powers include proposing legislation, drafting or amending bills, filibustering (delaying or blocking legislation via prolonged debate), oversight the federal budget, and the executive branch by approving or rejecting presidential appointees for agencies. The Vice President is considered the President of the Senate but can only vote if there is a tie.
